Our Jack Russell Terrier Breeding Philosophy

We are committed to deliver to you a healthy and confident Jack Russell Terrier puppy with a stable, eager and trainable temperament.  In turn we ask that you be prepared to view your new puppy as a member of your family and that you are committed to the continued training and socialization of your new puppy and to provide him/her with a lifetime of care and love.

No Unwanted Puppies:  We believe that puppies should not be brought into this world unless they are wanted.  As a result, we plan our puppies / litters in advance using a reservation process.

Responsible Breeding:  We believe all breeders should be held responsible for each and every puppy brought into this world therefore we require a reservation process to screen all potential puppy families.  We also require a contract with each family stating that if for any reason the family cannot keep their terrier, it is to be returned to us.  We believe that if all breeders showed the same sense of responsibility there would be no shelter dogs.

Health and Temperament:  We are breeding companion pets putting health and temperament above all else.  While we recognize that conformation is also important, we are not breeding show terriers.  If you are looking for a show terrier, perhaps we are not the breeder for you.  Our breeding dogs will pass many health screenings such as eyesight, hearing, heart, luxating patella’s, thyroid panels and complete blood chemistry panels.  We are seeking to breed intelligent, confident puppies with stable temperaments who get along well with all people, children and other pets.

Spay/Neuter:  All of our Jack Russell Terrier puppies are sold on Spay/Neuter agreements as we do not sell breeding rights.

Tails and Dew Claws:  Our puppies will have natural tails and dew claws intact.  There is no reason terriers need to have their tails docked or dew claws removed.  Please see this link for more information on tail docking

Conformation:  We are breeding a terrier that is longer than tall with an average height of 10 to 11 inches at the shoulder, an average back length of 11 to 13 inches and an average weight of about 10 to 16 pounds.  We prefer “drop” style or working ears but recognize that “up” ears can happen on occasion.  We are aiming for straight or near straight legs.  We do not breed “Puddin” Jacks as this is really a form dwarfism.

Enriched Environment:  In order to deliver a confident and stable puppy to you at eight weeks of age, our puppies will be raised in an enriched environment.  What this means simply is that our puppies are raised in the heart of the home where they will be exposed to all the sights and sounds of an average family.  They will not remain in the same room all the time but will have access to different rooms and the outside, have access to toys of all types, be exposed to different textures such as wood floors, tile, carpet and grass or snow depending on the time of year.  Puppies will be socialized by being exposed to other dogs and handled by children and adults of all walks of life.  We will make sure all puppies are exposed to different challenges as well such as up and down stairs and in and out of crates.

If you have any questions about our breeding philosophy that we have not been able to answer on this page, please feel free to contact us at any time.

Not to be confused with the taller Parson Jack Russell Terrier (12" to 16" tall) our shorter legged terriers are known by many names such as Irish Jack Russell Terrier,Shorty Jack Russell, English Jack Russell Terrier, Short Legged Jack Russell, Shorty Jack, Irish Jack or English Jack and stand on average 10" to 11" tall.
Temperament Testing:  To help find the best match in a terrier puppy for your family and lifestyle, we will be performing Temperament Testing on all the pups at seven weeks of age using the Polished Puppy™ Method as developed by Connemara Terriers.

Sound Socialization:  Using a special “sound socialization” CD our puppies will be desensitized to all types of sounds such as the television, sirens, pots and pans, gunshots, thunder, fireworks, airplanes, crying babies, traffic, machinery etc.  In other words, by the time they leave our home, they will have been exposed to all the normal sounds they are likely to encounter in their lifetime.

Early Socialization/Training:  We believe that the first four weeks your pup lives with you are the most important weeks of their lives.  It is during this time that the early socialization and training that was started in our home be continued by you.  All puppies should be enrolled in Puppy Kindergarten by the time they reach 12 weeks of age.  This is where the pup will learn puppy manners and bite inhibition.  In order to guarantee a well adjusted and confident pup, it is imperative to continue with puppy socialization and training throughout their adolescence.
